The project Harnessing Algae Power for Pollution Reduction and Blue Growth is a collaborative initiative dedicated to unlocking the potential of algae to tackle environmental challenges while fostering sustainable economic development in the Black Sea region.
By combining innovative tools, scientific research, and knowledge-sharing activities, the project promotes a coordinated regional approach to algae-related solutions.
As part of its monitoring and research activities, a research buoy has been deployed in the waters of the Port of Poti, Georgia. Equipped with automated sensors and powered by solar energy, the buoy continuously collects real-time data on key ecological parameters of the Black Sea.
The monitoring system supports research on algae growth dynamics, water quality assessment, and pollution reduction strategies. The data gathered will directly inform pilot actions, including the identification and cultivation of algae species with industrial potential. Selected species will be introduced into designated marine areas to evaluate their capacity to reduce nutrient levels and mitigate eutrophication.
These pilot activities will generate valuable insights into the effectiveness of algae-based solutions for improving marine ecosystems and explore their potential for wider industrial application and blue growth opportunities in the region.
