The partners of the project Pilot Action for Increasing the Capacity of Local and Regional Administrations to Develop and Implement Innovative Food Waste Public Awareness Actions – FoodWISE (BSB00221) have developed an Interactive Toolkit: Introduction and Best Practices for Managing Food Waste.
The toolkit is structured around three core sections: LEARN, INSPIRE, ACT.
- LEARN – This section provides insights into the scale and complexity of food waste, examining its far-reaching impact on social, economic, environmental, and climate-related issues. It also outlines key policy frameworks and global initiatives addressing food waste, such as the EU Green Deal, the EU Farm to Fork Strategy, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the New European Bauhaus.
- INSPIRE – Showcasing successful practices and innovative initiatives from the Black Sea Basin region and beyond, this section highlights how partnerships can foster food waste prevention behaviours across diverse target groups—children, youth, and adults—particularly in rural, coastal tourist destinations.
- ACT – This practical section provides a step-by-step guide on planning and implementing food waste reduction actions inspired by the examples in INSPIRE. Drawing on the extensive experience of project partners in environmental education and awareness campaigns, it is divided into clear phases: Plan, Implement, Monitor and Evaluate, Communicate, and Manage.
The toolkit is designed to serve as a teaching and learning resource for municipalities, helping them adopt practical tools and approaches to improve food waste management. It reflects collaborative work with partners and stakeholders and is informed by prior capacity assessments and data collection.
The overall goal is to empower local administration representatives in four participating countries to become leaders in promoting citizen awareness and behaviour change on food waste prevention. Using this toolkit, local decision-makers will gain the knowledge and tools to design and implement innovative awareness-raising initiatives tailored to the needs of communities in the Black Sea Basin region.
